About Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of GA

Mother and ChildEvery day, Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia (HMHB) works to improve access to healthcare for Georgia families. Our efforts include increasing access to prenatal and preventative healthcare for the thousands of low-income and/or uninsured families throughout our state.

Since our founding, the Coalition has been instrumental in helping to birth effective state-wide maternal and child health policies and programs. For example, in the early 1980s, a pregnant woman could arrive at a hospital ready to deliver and be turned away if uninsured. The Coalition helped pass the law that requires insurance companies to provide at least two days of hospital stay following a normal vaginal birth, as well as four days following a C-Section.

HMHB is the strongest state-wide voice and a respected advocacy leader for maternal and child health issues. Decision makers often look to the Coalition for expertise in advancing maternal and child health policy and affecting significant improvements, such as reducing duplication of services; eliminating barriers to existing services; and better utilizing limited healthcare resources.

HMHB Coalition of Georgia is a member of the National HMHB Coalition, based in Washington, D.C. Diligent efforts center on improving the health and safety of mothers, babies and families via education and collaborative partnerships with public and private organizations. Currently, there are 90 state and local HMHB Coalitions across the nation, all independent, yet all working toward achieving aspects of the National Coalition's mission.
