Who is Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia?

Sponsorship Facts

Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia (HMHB) works to improve access to healthcare for Georgia families. This work includes increasing access to prenatal and preventative healthcare for the thousands of low-income women and children in Georgia. HMHB has been influential in the creation of effective statewide maternal and child health policies and programs.

In 1984, the Coalition began operating a statewide telephone helpline for pregnant women who were having difficulty finding affordable prenatal care. Each access barrier was documented and analyzed, and the Coalition advocated for systems-based solutions. The Coalition continues to operate the helpline, known as the Powerline, which now serves a broader population of low-income women, children and men in Georgia. Last fiscal year the Powerline assisted 29,000 individuals experiencing difficulties or delays in accessing healthcare services. Through the Powerline’s statewide computer database of doctors, dentists, and community clinics that accept Medicaid and offer sliding scale fees, the Coalition has connected thousands to appropriate medical care. The Coalition also offers breastfeeding support services for clients and/or healthcare providers calling the Powerline. This program is highlighted in the enclosed Powerline Annual Report.

The Coalition is the strongest statewide voice in Georgia for maternal and child health issues and has established itself as a respected leader in maternal and child health policy in Georgia. Policy makers look to the Coalition for expertise in maternal and child health policy and make efforts to improve health care access by studying access barriers documented by the Powerline. But most importantly, the Coalition serves a vital role in linking public and private initiatives, resulting in the reduction of duplication of services, the elimination of barriers to existing services, and the effective utilization of limited health care resources.

What is the Annual Legislative Breakfast?

The Annual Legislative Breakfast is the Coalition’s most public forum to communicate our concerns regarding access to healthcare and the status of maternal and child health in Georgia. Through this Breakfast event, several hundred attendees learn about current advocacy issues that HMHB will address during that state legislative session. Additionally, many of Georgia’s state legislators, public health leaders and political dignitaries attend as a way to make contact with their constituents from across the state.

What is the benefit to my company or organization to be a sponsor?

The Sponsorship Benefit enclosure describes the specific benefits for each level of sponsorship for the Breakfast. However, even beyond these benefits is the knowledge that your company or organization is contributing to the solution of increasing access to healthcare for Georgia’s families.

Unfortunately, Georgia continues to rank poorly when compared to other states’ for health outcomes of children. For example, in the most recent 2002 Kids Count Data Book, Georgia is ranked 41st for percentage of low birthweight babies and 41st for infant mortality rate. Georgia is 33rd for the child death rate and 44th for percent of teens who are high school dropouts. These statistics do not lead to an educated, healthy and productive workforce of the future. Through your support of HMHB, you can do something to improve the outcomes for Georgia’s children.
