Carolyn Wetzel, Public Health Advocate Remembered

HMHB celebrates the life of Board Member, longtime friend and public health advocate, Carolyn Wetzel.  The former HMHB Board President died February 15, 2009 after a battle with cancer.

Her service to HMHB was untiring as were her years of service to Public Health in Georgia and the south and to issues affecting the health of women and families. Her leadership and strong advocacy will be missed at HMHB. We were privileged to have her as a driving force of this organization for many years.

Carolyn Wetzel was a member of HMHB for more than 25 years.  For most of those years, she actively served on the Board of Directors, giving leadership, direction and personal talents to this organization.  She was HMHB's Board President from Oct 2001-Oct 2005.  In addition to her advocacy as a member of HMHB's Public Affairs Committee, she was a tireless fundraiser and financial steward.  When the need arose, she also served as Interim Executive Director for several months.  She was always a supportive advisor and counsel to staff and the Board throughout her tenure with HMHB.

Besides serving as President of HMHB and on the Public Affairs, Fundraising and Organizational Management Committees of HMHB, Carolyn was an active member of the Georgia Public Health Association and served for several years on the GPHA finance committee.

She will be missed not only for her many contributions, but also for her warmth, her enthusiasm and her joyful dedication to the causes she championed.

A memorial service was held for Carolyn Saturday, February 21, 2009 at Oakhurst Presbyterian Church, Decatur.  For more on Carolyn Wetzel’s service in Georgia and the South in Public Health and WIC we invite you to read the articles we have linked below.
