Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies | Coalition of Georgia

About Us

Since 1973, Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia, known as HMHB, has worked to improve the lives of Georgia’s women and children.

Our mission is to improve access to healthcare for Georgia's women and children.

 We accomplish our mission in the following ways:

 ¨       Advocating at Georgia’s State Capital for improved preventive and curative health services and programs for women, children and families;

¨       Serving the community through the PowerLine, Georgia’s statewide, toll-free, bi-lingual telephone information and referral line for free and reduced-cost healthcare services.

¨       Collaborating through forums where legislators, policymakers, healthcare professionals and advocates can share ideas for improving the health of Georgia’s women, children and families.

Advocacy: HMHB is Georgia’s strongest statewide voice for improved access to healthcare and improved maternal and child health outcomes.  Through our statewide network of grassroots advocates, HMHB has improved access to prenatal and preventive healthcare for thousands of low-income women, children and families in Georgia during the last 35 years.   Each year the Coalition publishes a Legislative Agenda identifying issues to address during the legislative session.  HMHB’s Legislative Advocate, Executive Director, Board and Coalition Members work to educate legislators on these issues and encourage them to support public policy that promotes the health of Georgia’s women, children and families. For more information on HMHB's legislative work click here.

Serving the Community: HMHB operates the PowerLine, Georgia’s toll-free helpline for healthcare referrals. The PowerLine maintains a database of Georgia’s low-cost and sliding-scale providers, free clinics, public health programs and community health services.  Operators are available who speak both Spanish and English and who can assist callers in finding specific providers or programs available to meet their individual needs within their community.  The PowerLine also answers the Georgia WIC customer service toll-free telephone line and refers callers to the appropriate WIC Clinic and records reports of complaints or fraud.  Finally, PowerLine provides referrals for the Division of Public Health’s Perinatal HIV Prevention Project, Babies Born Healthy, Babies Can’t Wait and Children 1st.  Through its information and referral services, PowerLine has consistently had a positive impact on access to healthcare for Georgians. The PowerLine is funded by the Division of Public Health, Georgia Department of Community Health. For more information on the PowerLine click here.

Collaborating: HMHB encourages communication and networking among policy makers, professionals, advocates and others through its Annual Legislative Event, Annual Meeting and Conference, weekly e-newsletters and legislative alerts.  By sharing information about the status of Georgia’s Medicaid system, public health system and other social service entities, HMHB serves as a catalyst to strengthen health related services for women, children and families.   For more information on our Events click here.
